 THE RAGING TORRENT

Mordechai Cogan

15.3ª23.3 cm (6ª91⁄4 in.); 264 pp.; b&w; illustrations; cloth

This volume presents a comprehensive collection of the royal inscriptions from Assyria and Babylonia that treat the Land of Israel and the People of Israel. Covering a period of just over three hundred years during the first half of the 1st millennium BCE, these texts tell the story of the military encounters—both victories and defeats—between the Mesopotamian empires and the kingdoms of Israel and Judah. Many of the texts relate to events described in the Hebrew Bible, while others provide information about affairs that were unknown until their discovery in modern times. All the texts have been newly translated from the original cuneiform documents and are accompanied by a consecutive commentary and select bibliography.

Mordechai Cogan, Ph.D., is professor of Biblical History at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He has written widely on the political and cultural connections between ancient Israel and the empires of the ancient Near East. He is the author of many studies and books, among them: Imperialism and Religion; commentaries in the Anchor Bible series on 1 Kings; 2 Kings (with Prof. Hayim Tadmor); commentaries in Hebrew in the Mikra Leyisrael (Bible for Israel) series on Obadiah; Joel; Nahum.

CARTA'S NEW CENTURY HANDBOOK AND ATLAS OF THE BIBLE

Anson F. Rainey & R. Steven Notley

23ª30 cm (9ª12 in.); 280 pp.; full color; maps, illustrations and photographs; index; cloth, hardcover.

a concise version of The Sacred Bridge: Carta’s Atlas of the Biblical World (see below), is meant for use by all those who have a love for biblical history. College teachers will find it useful for undergraduates alongside the standard Carta Bible Atlas, which it complements by being more of a historical geography.

This concise version will augment the personal Bible study of all who seek a straightforward understanding of biblical history. Nevertheless, the reader will still have the sense that sacred history came about in a real world, a realm illumined by a multitude of discoveries and studies during the past two hundred years. Furthermore, the geographical dimension of the Bible accounts is being thoroughly presented. Every Bible student may thus put himself in the ancient reality and feel the events as they were experienced by the ancient Israelites and their neighbors.

This new historical handbook and atlas will enrich the Bible reading experience of a wide audience for whom the Sacred Canon enjoys special significance in their lives.

Anson F. Rainey, Th.M., Ph.D., is emeritus professor of Ancient Near Eastern Cultures and Semitic Linguistics and adjunct professor of Historical Geography at Bar Ilan University and the American Institute for Holy Land Studies.

R. Steven Notley, Ph.D., is professor of Biblical Studies at the New York City campus of Nyack College and former chairman of the Department of New Testament Studies at the American Institute for Holy Land Studies.

LETTERS HOME TO SAN FRANCISCO FROM OCCUPIED GERMANY 1945-1946

Helga Dudman
16.7ª23.5 cm (6½ª9¼ in.); b&w; 176 pp.; softcover

This gripping and very unusual book of letters from over 60 years ago is as up-to-date as tomorrow’s diet. Written by an all-American 23-year-old, they combine on-the-spot documentation and conversations with personal insights, politics, flirtations, gossip, and hopes for a better future.
A patriotic apple-pie American in uniform (but a civilian), the writer loved to quote Goethe’s Faust to imprisoned Nazi war criminals in the bombed-out zones of occupation. In-fighting and ego-trips among the winners were, as always, in place — just as in today’s War of the Worlds.
